Communication skills are taught in school. But many people don’t know how to improve on them. They think that communication is always in the way. It’s true. But it isn’t always in the way that people want it to be.
You can have a conversation with someone and not even utter a single word. Communication is the act of exchanging information through the use of both verbal and non-verbal communication. The exchange has to be done constructively. Most people wouldn’t believe that a teacher would take their communication skills for granted. And yet, teachers all the time to get paid for their work.
Now, if I were to get paid for taking an assessment, then my salary would depend on how well I did. But the real question here is; why would I pay someone to take my communications skills for me? After all, there are many other ways to improve my skills without paying an arm and a leg. There are hundreds of articles on the internet that teach different techniques to communicate. They are free.

I think that if someone understands that the purpose of the test is to find out what I am actually capable of doing in a given situation, they would take it more seriously. Instead of saying “okay, I’ll try”, they would actually say “wow, I never expected this to happen!” A good communicator knows that you can expect great results from even small efforts. I often ask how they are doing and they tell me. It’s humbling to ask someone to take my skills for them!
A lot of times, communication skills play second fiddle to the more visible skills in a candidate’s resume. Communication doesn’t have to be number one on a list – it should be! I have had people apply for jobs and send me a resume that included communication skills only – no art, no writing, no experience, just an overview of their skills. They didn’t even bother to take the time to explain how these particular skills would help the company.
If you are applying for a job and want to show off your communication skills, be sure to take the extra time to learn them. You don’t need to know everything – but you do need to know enough to make an impression. Don’t let a lack of experience or writing ability to be the deciding factor. There is always another person with more experience who is also applying. Make your first impression count.
A few years back, I took an online communication skills certification test. I was surprised at how accurate it was – even for the people who didn’t know a thing about English grammar!
